Our Better Cotton Approach

Better Cotton Chain of Custody

With such high volumes of Better Cotton being produced each year, it has become important to track the movement of materials between supply chains with clearer evidence and documentation to protect all stakeholders and consumers. In light of this, the Better Cotton Chain of Custody was introduced to focus on the processing and traceability of Better Cotton.

The internationally audited Better Cotton Chain of Custody allows organizations to leverage one or more CoC Models to prove their Better Cotton sourcing activities and quantities. Applicable to stakeholders in farming, production and sourcing roles, with or without BCI membership, the BCI CoC is an on-site verification according to the Better Cotton Chain of Custody Guidelines V1.4.

Businesses that adopt the Better Cotton CoC will be better able to understand social and environmental issues in the cotton supply chain and effectively manage traceability of Better Cotton.

Cotton Consumption Independent Assessment for Brand and Retailer Member

Better Cotton’s Brand and Retailer Member (BR Member) is required to regularly calculate and report its total cotton fiber consumption and provide relevant supporting documentation in accordance with the guidelines set out in “Measuring Cotton Consumption: Requirements and Guidance” and provide relevant supporting documentation in accordance with the guidelines set out in the ‘Measuring Cotton Consumption’ section.

From January 2024, RB Members are obliged to conduct an Independent Assessment of their cotton fiber consumption measurements to ensure the consistency and reliability of their results, unless exempted. The requirement and frequency of the Independent Assessment is determined by membership size, category and total cotton fiber consumption. An Independent Assessment is required if RB Members wish to benefit from certain claims (such as Enhanced Claims and Brand on Product).
